The Truth Behind E-Cigarettes

E cigarettes may come in many shapes, colors and flavors, but they still contain nicotine and other chemicals. While they are often seen as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, it’s important to understand what you may be inhaling and how it can affect your health.

Using e cigarettes can come with risks. Without clear information about what’s in each product, it can be difficult to make informed choices. A few important things to keep in mind:

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorizes certain brands of e-cigarettes for sale in the U.S.; however, “authorization” does not mean the products are safe or “approved” by the FDA.
  • It can be unclear what chemicals, other than nicotine, are in the vapor.
  • Nicotine levels differ with each device and flavor.

Nicotine is a highly addictive substance that can affect the brain, heart and your overall health. Repeated exposure increases your dependence and makes it harder to quit over time.

If you have questions about nicotine use or e-cigarettes, talking with a health care provider should be your first step. Your health care provider can help you understand the risks and discuss options for reducing or quitting nicotine. All university-sponsored medical plans can connect you with providers for screenings and care related to lung health and substance use.

In addition, some of your university-provided benefits can help:

  • Get support: The UCH Member Assistance Program (MAP) offers 24/7 confidential support to benefits-eligible employees. Through the program, you can receive up to three referrals and access a national network of available providers to get face-to-face or virtual counseling and talk through your triggers, routines and challenges related to nicotine use.
  • Stay involved with your wellness: If you’re enrolled in a UMR medical plan, the Live Well Reward$ wellness program can help you work toward your health goals while earning incentives. Complete wellness activities, get preventive screenings to stay informed about your health and build healthier habits with coaching and action plans.
