The addition of a new family member is a life changing experience. Paid parental leave is available when you need time away for the birth, adoption or foster placement of a child (up to 18 years of age) so you can adjust and bond together as a family.
Paid parental leave allows you up to six weeks of paid leave. You may not use paid parental leave intermittently or under a reduced work schedule.
Eligibility
Paid parental leave is available to the following employees after two years of consecutive, benefits-eligible employment at the university:
- Birth parents
- Legal spouses of birth parents
- Adoptive/foster parents
Employees are not eligible to receive paid parental leave during periods where they would not otherwise be paid. For example, a nine-month faculty member is not eligible for paid parental leave during the summer months when the faculty member would not otherwise be on active payroll.
Note: If you and your spouse are both employed by the university and eligible for paid parental leave, availability to take leave is limited to a combined total of six weeks. Your six weeks of total leave will be divided equally between you if you cannot reach an agreement on allocation.
Benefit
Paid parental leave will be paid at your regular rate of pay. Pay not included in your base salary (i.e. bonuses, incentives, overtime) is not included in calculating paid parental leave.
Leave is limited to one use per child.* You may take paid parental leave a maximum of three times.
For more information, refer to UAS Board Policy 420.2.
*For example, you are not eligible to take paid parental leave for the adoption of a child if you took it for the foster placement of the same child.
