UAS UMR Cares – November: Infection Prevention
Illnesses such as the common cold, influenza (flu), COVID-19 and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) tend to spike during the fall and winter months. Reduced sunlight and lower absorption of vitamin D, which supports immune function, combined with abrupt weather changes and greater contact with indoor germs, can increase the likelihood of illness.
While many illnesses start with minor symptoms, viral infections can quickly become more serious. It’s important to protect yourself by practicing healthy habits and making minor changes to your daily lifestyle. Distancing yourself from individuals who are ill, washing your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, disinfecting regularly used household surfaces and avoiding crowded places can help reduce the risk of infection.
As a university employee, you have access to a variety of benefits that can help protect your health:
- Routine preventative care: Viral illnesses, like the flu, tend to mutate every year, so it’s best to get vaccinated routinely to remain safeguarded against infection. Your university medical plan provides preventative care services at no cost to you.
- Sick leave: If you’re sick or need time away to attend a medical appointment, remember to use sick leave.
- UnitedHealthcare supplemental health insurance: If you’re diagnosed with a serious illness or require hospitalization, UHC benefits can help cover hospital stays and necessary treatments, ensuring you receive high-quality care without added financial stress.
- Telehealth: If you’re feeling unwell and unable to leave your home, telehealth services offer a convenient way to access medical care without traveling to a clinic. Through virtual appointments, you can connect with health care professionals who can assess your symptoms, provide guidance and even prescribe medications if needed. Telehealth visits have the same copay as an office visit with your primary care physician, making it an affordable and accessible option.
