Whether you have already welcomed a new family member or are thinking about welcoming one soon, a lot goes into family planning. Lean on your university-provided benefits for support during this exciting time.
Health Support
Medical Plans
All three university medical plans provide benefits for infertility, prenatal, childbirth and post-natal care. Additionally, the university offers special programs and benefits to ensure you have a smooth transition when starting a family.
- Infertility support. Navigating infertility treatment can be overwhelming, but if you are enrolled in university medical coverage, you can contact the UMR Maternity Management Program for assistance. Speak with a dedicated nurse, who can guide you through pre-approvals and inform you of your options. Call 844-604-6244 to get started.
- Healthy pregnancy support. UMR offers pre-pregnancy and pregnancy coaching through the Maternity CARE program. Meet one-on-one with a CARE nurse for wellness support before and after your baby is born. Call 844-604-6244 to get started.
HealthNow
As a new parent, time is in short supply, so skip long waits and visit a UAMS HealthNow virtual doctor for minor medical issues.

- Unlimited phone access to master’s-level specialists, 24/7.
- Up to three referrals for face-to-face counseling sessions.
- A 30-to-60-minute financial consultation.

Talkspace
If you are enrolled in a university medical plan, use Talkspace to reach a licensed therapist via private messaging or live video sessions.
Financial Support
Health Savings Account
If you’re enrolled in the Health Savings Plan, the university contributes to your health savings account (HSA) each year. You can make your own contributions, which are deducted from your pay before taxes, lowering your taxable income.
Use the university’s contributions, plus any you make yourself, to pay for eligible health care costs, or invest the contributions and watch them grow tax-free for future health expenses.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Your contributions to a flexible spending account (FSA) are deducted from your pay before taxes, which lowers your taxable income.
- Dependent Care FSA. Set aside pretax dollars to pay for eligible childcare, after-school care, summer day camp and elder care.
- Healthcare FSA. Set aside pretax dollars to pay for eligible medical, prescription drug, dental, vision and hearing expenses.
Note: You must elect a FSA during your first 31 days of employment or open enrollment.
Parental Leave
Short-Term Disability Coverage
Short-term disability (STD) insurance replaces a portion of your income while you recover from childbirth.
Paid Parental Leave
Once you’ve been with the university for two consecutive years, paid parental leave is available for you to bond with your new child. You can take up to six weeks of leave at your regular rate of pay. Leave is available during the first 12 months after the birth, adoption or foster placement of your child under age 18.
