Your Guide to Managing Diabetes

Living with diabetes doesn't have to define your life. With consistent daily habits and the right support, you can stay in control of your health and feel your best, both at work and beyond.

Managing diabetes starts with building a routine that fits your lifestyle. Small, intentional actions each day can make a meaningful difference in how you feel and help reduce the risk of complications down the road.

A strong daily routine may include:

  • Monitoring your blood sugar levels regularly
  • Taking insulin or medications as prescribed
  • Checking your feet for changes or sores
  • Staying active and eating balanced meals
  • Keeping an eye on your weight

These simple steps help you stay aware of your health and respond quickly when something changes.

Consistency, not perfection, is what matters most. Even small improvements in your daily habits can support better energy, focus, and long-term wellness. The more you understand your body and your patterns, the more confident you'll feel managing your care.

Staying connected to your care team is just as important. Talk with your physician about any concerns or changes in your condition and make sure your treatment plan still fits your needs.

The good news is that you don't have to manage diabetes on your own, and you don't have to cover the cost by yourself, either. Your university benefits are designed to support your day-to-day care:

  • Enroll in clinical condition management support through the MedEmpower Fuel app to receive personal coaching and access additional tools to help improve your health outcomes.
  • Through your UMR medical plan, you can enroll in care management and get help from a coach in developing health care goals while adhering to your diabetes treatment plan. Note: High-risk individuals may be invited to work with a health coach, but self-enrollment is available by contacting UMR directly at 866-575-2540.
  • Insulin pumps are covered under the medical plan, while glucose monitors brands such as FreeStyle Libre and Dexcom G6 are covered under the prescription drug plan.
  • Living with a chronic condition can be taxing, both mentally and emotionally. For 24/7 support from a licensed therapist, access your Talkspace mental health benefit to discuss anything that’s troubling you via private messaging, text, voice or video messages, or live video sessions.
