UAS UMR Cares – June: Men’s Health
Establishing a supportive environment is important for the early detection and prevention of health issues among men, including heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes and mental health challenges. Men may encounter social and cultural barriers that discourage them from seeking care or discussing their health. June is National Men’s Health Month, and during this month let’s focus on addressing those barriers, promoting awareness about the importance of regular health care and highlighting that self-care is beneficial.
Start creating healthier habits with simple steps such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep. For more ways to improve your health, you may also take advantage of the following university-offered benefits:
- Visit a specialist: On top of getting annual checkups with a primary care physician (PCP), it is important for men to visit a specialist regularly. With the leading causes of death for men in the U.S. being heart disease and cancer, it’s best to visit an in-network cardiologist and oncologist to check in on your current health status and prevent the development of these diseases.
- UMR programs: Your medical plan provides certain health programs to assist you in creating health goals, adhere to your treatment plans, and help you and your family manage living with a chronic condition. If you’ve been diagnosed with a chronic condition or have a high-risk health concern, look into UMR’s Disease Management or Care Management programs.
- Wellness benefits: If you’re enrolled in the UMR Live Well Reward$ Program or one of the UHC insurance plans, you can receive financial compensation for getting wellness screenings, tests and assessments annually. Note: Missed the deadline to enroll in these programs? You have an opportunity to enroll again during this year’s open enrollment.
- Mental health resources: The university offers a range of mental health programs that allow you to speak to someone confidentially about your concerns. Whether you want to talk to someone in person or from the comfort of your own home, benefits are available to fit your needs.
